Synopsis

Freya was never meant to be queen. Twenty-third in line to the throne, she never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of the court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly and the king and those closest to him are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne.

She may have escaped the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles don't respect her, her councillors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, she knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdom—and her life.

Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she can't trust anyone. Not her advisers. Not the king's dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her but also wanted more power for himself.

As Freya's enemies close in and her loyalties are tested, she must decide if she is ready to rule and, if so, how far she is willing to go to keep the crown.

I'll admit my expectations going in were pretty low based on some other reviews I'd seen but I had a great time reading (well, listening really since I went the audiobook route) this book! It had a fabulous main character and the whole......more

I only bought this purely because a few people kept comparing it to The Queen of the Tearling and since that is one of my favourite trilogies I thought, could never go wrong with that. So, right off the bat, let me just say that this is NOTHING like TQotT. Not by a mile. Aside from the fact that thes......more

I had a very entertaining time reading this book. I really enjoyed reading from Freya's perspective and watching her try to unravel this murder mystery is pretty exciting. This book was, somehow, not quite what I expected it to be, but nonetheless I had a great time reading it. What threw me off bal......more

This book is like the princess diaries meets murder mystery. What drew me to this book was the stand-alone aspect. There are rarely fantasy stand-alone books and sometimes I am not in the mood to read multiple books to find out how a story ends. Unfortunately, there was no fantasy in this but I stil......more

I have never read a story about an introvert. And not just that, but an introvert with crippling social anxiety. It was so refreshing to see myself in the story! The political intrigue is fabulous, and the book has just the perfect pinch of romance to tie everything together. This is definitely a qu......more
