Synopsis

The British historian and author of Into India delivers a history that is intelligent, incisive, and eminently readable (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).Fully revised with forty thousand new words that take the reader up to present-day India, John Keay’s India: A History spans five millennia in a sweeping narrative that tells the story of the peoples of the subcontinent, from their ancient beginnings in the valley of the Indus to the events in the region today. In charting the evolution of the rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and peoples that comprise the modern nations of Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, Keay weaves together insights from a variety of scholarly fields to create a rich historical narrative. Wide-ranging and authoritative, India: A History is a compelling epic portrait of one of the world's oldest and most richly diverse civilizations. Keay's panoramic vision and multidisciplinary approach serves the function of all great historical writing. It illuminates the present. -Thrity Umrigar, The Boston Globe. India: A History is skillfully narrated by Mike Fraser, an Audible listener favorite. Produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont.

About John Keay

John Keay is the author of nearly twenty books, all factual, mostly historical, and largely to do with Asia, exploration, or Scotland. UK-based and a full-time author since 1973, he also wrote and presented over 100 documentaries for BBC Radios 3 and 4 from 1975 to 95 and guest-lectured tour groups from 1990 to 2000. He reviews on related subjects, occasionally speaks on them, and travels extensively.

How do you boil down thousands of years of civilization, empires, kingdoms and conquests too numerous to mention here into one book? I haven't the faintest idea how he manages to pull it off, but in India, A History John Keay does exactly that- and more to the point, does it extremely well. This boo......more

Keay's history is incredibly detailed, with so much that was new to me that I felt like a complete ignoramus. It's also a very disciplined, focused history. Keay shuns speculative reflection, sticks to the available evidence, orders things chronologically, and focuses on matters of governance far mo......more
