Synopsis

They say I'm a murderer.

Six years ago, Kate Reynolds was found holding the body of her best friend; covered in blood, and clutching the knife that killed her.

I plead guilty.

Kate has been in prison ever since, but now her sentence is up. She is being released.

But the truth is, I didn't do it.

There's only one person who can help: Private Investigator Madison Attalee, the first officer on the scene all those years ago.

But there's someone out there who doesn't want Kate digging up the past. Someone who is willing to keep the truth buried at any cost.

Robert Galbraith meets Susie Steiner in this gripping debut from Niki Mackay.

I Witness was an absolutely gripping psychological thriller with some great characters and that brilliant page turning addictive quality that I love to find in a book. Kate Reynolds, convicted of brutally stabbing and killing her best friend has served her time. She believes she may be innocent, so h......more

The murder of Naomi Andrews was an open and shut case. Her best friend, Kate Reynolds, confessed, after being found covered in blood, holding both the body and the murder weapon. She served six years, not long enough according to some, and as if her release wasn’t enough to set tongues wagging, she’......more

My View: Gripping, choc full of twists and surprises, every time you think you have it worked out -think again-you don’t. A flawed (read that as very flawed but good hearted, empathetic, dedicated… ) female Private Investigator ex- cop is a wonderful protagonist that quickly gains the readers respect......more

Just because someone confesses to a murder, does that mean that this person committed the crime? Six years ago, Kate Reynolds was found clutching a knife and holding the bloody body of her dead best friend. She is arrested, pleads guilty to the crime, and serves her jail sentence. While in prison, Ka......more

I picked this book up in desperation really as the two books I had read before it were both books I couldn’t get into and did not finish. The blurb for I, Witness sounded right up my street so I plucked it from my TBR pile hoping to be transported into a gripping psychological thriller and thankfull......more

Quotes

Cracking thriller and a great female protagonist. Swearing, smoking, rock-music loving (and not neurotic or passive!) My kind of woman. C.J. Tudor, author of The Chalk Man

I was swept away by this punchy, pacy thriller with its sharp characterisation and confident plotting. I devoured it in a single day. I particularly loved Madison's fabulously chain-smoking, hyper-feminine sharpness. There were so many things done well here - the presentation of domestic abuse, dysfunctional families, the uneven dynamic of female friendships that border on bullying - so much to enjoy. So looking forward to the next one. Helen Callaghan, author of Dear Amy

Tough and uncompromising, I, Witness had me totally gripped. I'm looking forward to hearing more from PI Madison Attalee. Alex Lake, author of Killing Kate, After Anna and Copy Cat

An absolutely gripping thriller founded on the horror of familial abuse and a great, flawed, female PI. There will be more Madison Attalee, I hope. Dame Jenni Murray

Totally engaging, fast-paced and edgy ... completely captivating. I, Witness kept me guessing till the very end. Pick this book up if you're after a page-turner with attitude. Elle Croft, author of The Guilty Wife

I couldn't put I,Witness down. A hugely accomplished novel with a dark, sad story at its heart - the characters are so well drawn that I felt every twist along with them as Mackay expertly manipulates the reader. With a wonderful, chain-smoking and perfume-spraying private detective driving the narrative, this is a 2018 must-read. Phoebe Morgan, author of The Doll House

Cutting-edge gripping. Sam King, author of The Choice

Had me hooked within two pages, it has every bit as much appeal as some of the bestsellers of the last few years, like Girl on the Train. Robert Scragg, author of What Falls Between the Cracks

A humdinger of a thriller debut ... a maze of lies, deceit and danger. Evening Telegraph

With a fantastic main character in the troubled PI Madison Attallee (hopefully we'll be seeing more of her), a slick plot and the clever device of switching viewpoints from Madison to Kate to her sister-in-law Claudia and even Naomi's mum, Anthea, author Niki MacKay pull us in and keeps us guessing right up to the end of this pacy murder-mystery.
