Synopsis

When the Israelites exclaimed, "Here are your gods!" at the sight of the golden calf, they were attempting to hold on to the God of their history while fashioning idols for their own purposes.

In today's Western world, plenty of shiny false gods still hold power—idols of prosperity, nationalism, and self-interest. Christians desperately need to name and expose these idols. We must retrieve the biblical emphasis on idolatry and apply it anew in our journey of following Jesus. In "Here Are Your Gods", Old Testament scholar Christopher J. H. Wright combines a biblical study of idolatry with practical discipleship. He calls listeners to consider connections between Old Testament patterns and today's culture, especially recurring temptations to trust in political power. Now as much as ever, we need a biblically informed understanding of the many ways humans make gods for themselves, the danger of idols, and how God calls us to join him in the battle against idolatry as part of his ongoing mission to be known and worshiped by all peoples.

I have a love-hate relationship with some books. I find them feeding my understanding, bringing me to reflect, and arousing my prayers. Definitely a popular level book by Wright. First section of the book is 5 star worthy since he is well within his field of OT scholarship. Second section is 2 stars. He predicts the downfall of the west and the rise of China. Granted he says he is merely speculating and it was a transcript from a ta......more

Such a timely book. Wright does a great job exploring how idols and gods have always been present in culture, including what they are (and aren't, which I really enjoyed, as he answered a lot of questions I’ve had). The second half of the book talks about the christian response to idolatry and the r......more

There are a lot of things to like about Wright's discussion of modern day idolatry. When Wright sticks to a discussion of idolatry he excels; when he talks politics, he occasionally gets sidetracked. The concepts of fear as an idol, nations as idols, syncretistic Christianity, and idolatry as the ca......more
