Synopsis

Five hundred years from its launch, the colony vessel Lovelock is deep into its sub lightspeed journey, carrying four thousand humans in search of a habitable planet. When a series of explosions tear the ship apart, it is forced to land on the nearest possible location: a polar section of the Helix—a vast, spiral construct of worlds, wound about a G-type sun.

While most of the colonists remain in coldsleep, the surviving crew members of the Lovelock must proceed upspiral in search of a habitable section. On their expedition they encounter extraordinary landscapes and alien races, meet with conflict and assistance, and attempt to solve the epic mystery that surrounds the origin of the Helix.

Helix combines engrossing scientific mystery, high adventure, and a depth of moving characterisation, written by one of the true talents of the genre.

“Smart, fun, page-turning stuff, with an engaging cast and plenty of twists … A hugely entertaining read.”—SFX Magazine

He stood and stared. Something about the arrangement of the distant points of light, the unfamiliarity of the constellations, brought home to him the fact of their isolation. This book is probably for a younger audience because of its simplistic and shallow story. But first off, this is barely a sci-fi book. This is mostly a book about oppressive religion. Not at all what I expected! Nor what I wanted. Although some of the ideas in this book could have been great, they are......more

Helix starts off with the story I want to read. Colonists going to a new place and establishing a colony. I don't know why I'm drawn to this story - maybe its a lasting impression from my Robinson Crusoe/Swiss Family Robinson days... And then, like so may before it, it turned left. And it wasn't qui......more

Helix by Eric Brown was a disappointing book, at least for me. I read it because I have read several of Eric Brown's other novels and enjoyed them greatly. This one never reached its potential as far as I was concerned. It dealt with a group of humans who are forced to flee a dying earth and seek a......more

I think what attracted me to this book was the concept of humans on their own trying to set up a colony on a new world against the odds. What I enjoyed about the book - I thought the concept of the helix was intriguing and imaginative - providing plenty of scope for a number of over novels. I though......more
