From the bestselling author of Alone and The Killing Hour comes a thriller that goes from heartbreaking to heartstopping in the blink of an eye.…
When someone you love vanishes without a trace, how far would you go to get them back?
For ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, it’s the beginning of his worst nightmare: a car abandoned on a desolate stretch of Oregon highway, engine running, purse on the driver’s seat. And his estranged wife, Rainie Conner, gone, leaving no clue to her fate.
Did one of the ghosts from Rainie’s troubled past finally catch up with her? Or could her disappearance be the result of one of the cases they’d been working– a particularly vicious double homicide or the possible abuse of a deeply disturbed child Rainie took too close to heart? Together with his daughter, FBI agent Kimberly Quincy, Pierce is battling the local authorities, racing against time, and frantically searching for answers to all the questions he’s been afraid to ask.
One man knows what happened that night. Adopting the alias of a killer caught eighty years before, he has already contacted the press. His terms are clear: he wants money, he wants power, he wants celebrity. And if he doesn’t get what he wants, Rainie will be gone for good.
Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, it’s still not enough.
As the clock winds down on a terrifying deadline, Pierce plunges headlong into the most desperate hunt of his life, into the shattering search for a killer, a lethal truth, and for the love of his life, who may forever be…gone.

Lisa Gardner was raised in Hillsboro, Oregon and graduated from the city’s Glencoe High School. A #1 New York Times crime thriller novelists, she has several thrillers including The Killing Hour and The Next Accident. She describes herself as a research junkie and her work as a research analyst for an international consulting firm parlayed her interest in police procedure, cutting edge forensics and twisted plots into a streak of internationally bestselling suspense novels, including her most recent release, Find Her.
With over 22 million books in print, Lisa is published in 30 countries. Her success crosses into the small screen with four of her novels becoming movies (At the Midnight Hour; The Perfect Husband; The Survivors Club; Hide) and personal appearances on television shows (TruTV; CNN).
Lisa currently lives in New Hampshire with her auto-racing husband and black-diamond skiing daughter. She spends her days writing in her loft with a gentle old sheltie and a wonderfully silly puppy.
Another gripping suspense novel by Gardner focusing on Rainie Cooper and Pierce Quincy who are now married and working as partners as private detectives. Rainie is stressed, having trouble with some cases and is depressed and begins to drink again which puts her in harm’s way and she is kidnapped. The book spans mostly the two days she is gone and the series of heart-pounding events that take place over that time from Rainie’s personal plight and Quincy’s efforts to save her. There is the usual biting wit among the local, state and FBI officers which is like an intelligent ****ing contest which adds to the depth of the novel. This is also about fame and at what lengths some people will go to achieve it. I was reading the book the week of the Virginia Tech tragedy and I kept thinking about it and how the guy who did the shooting at VTech is very much like the killer in the book. Some people don’t care about how they get their fame as long as they get it and I think that is a chilling commentary about our society. Gardner is very adept at making her stories more than a simple whodunit and her writing is outstanding. I did not have a clue to the identity of the killer until the characters knew and I think that is great! If you are interested in this novel, I recommend reading THE THIRD VICTIM and THE NEXT ACCIDENT first so you will be up to speed on the Rainie-Quincy relationship. My favorite book by Gardner is THE KILLING HOUR. It is outstanding in the genre of literary suspense.
This started out kind of 'ho hum', then in the middle of the first disc I was hooked...exciting, thriller and the reader was excellent!!!! I enjoyed this very much and your description kind of says it all about the story. I will get more of Lisa Gardner's stories...thank you
