This is a mystery novel that has elements that lend themselves to the LGBTQ+ by producing the first nonbinary main character, Deryn. There are other characters in the story who also never reveal their gender. The main plot and characters of the story came to me fully formed and realized with the characters having no gender. I decided to leave it as such for the audience to experience the story as I did.
