Synopsis

Good friends make a good life.Friendship is one of the most important yet most underrated necessities of life. A sense of connection and belonging is a key part of being human, and there are boundless benefits from having close friends who know everything about you, can help you out in a pinch, can be there with you through all the joys and hardships of life, and for whom you can be such a friend in turn. But making and keeping friends becomes increasingly difficult when we become adults with busy careers, family responsibilities, and dispersed locations. Keeping in touch through social media isn’t as fulfilling as developing true, deep, lasting bonds of friendship, argues therapist Gina Handley Schmitt. She proceeds to provide knowledge, perspective, and scripts to help you create the friendships you crave. In this book, you’ll learn the art of choosing and making friends, supporting your friends and letting them support you, maintaining friendships even when your life paths diverge, repairing friendships after a conflict, the difficult decision to break up a friendship, and much more. Life is so much sweeter with good friends by your side.

Disclaimer: I have to be totally honest, the author of this book is a dear friend of mine, but I have tried not to let that influence my opinion of the book. She did not give me a free copy (come on, Gina... jk) or ask me to review it. This is my (hopefully) unbiased opinion! The need for a book like......more

I love how this book was written around “the five core skills” of friendship- being available, authentic, affirming, assertive, and accepting. So much truth in each of those points! The writing style was very personable and easy to listen to, and I appreciated the application questions at the end of......more

I grabbed this from Powells because of the cute cover. I think a lot of this was good advice, but personally I felt the book was a bit repetitive and a bit common sense. I do think a lot about the part where she says it doesn’t matter what you say to intimate plans the first step is just getting tha......more

Quotes

“Narrator Liisa Ivary explains the basic principles of establishing and maintaining friendships…in an empathetic voice that makes the listener feel as though we are in a caring therapist’s or life coach’s office and getting excellent advice. She brings to her performance a personable quality that enhances the listening experience…This title is easy on the ears and could be completed during a long run or road trip.” AudioFile

“We know Schmitt’s theories can work because she’s illustrated them with relatable examples…That is what makes this book such a great read. Friending isn’t meant to be consumed in one go—you are supposed to pick up the sections of the book that pertain to you. Looking to create friendships? Read the chapter on being available and answer those questions. Can’t handle a friend who is being rude or judgmental? Find out how to solve the issue in the chapter on assertiveness.” WomenWriteaboutComics.com
