Synopsis

So what if Nameless can’t get his girlfriend, Kerry, to marry him? So what if he can’t talk his partner, Eberhardt, out of his bitter funk? It seems Gianna’s roommate is turning tricks, and Nameless’ search quickly leads him to a pimp, a murder, and into a dark pit of human perversion—the kind of place where people die. What happen to Gianna Fornessi? Ask Nameless: he’s the one gripping his .38 and writing epitaphs in his head …

In this exciting, well-crafted Nameless Detective mystery, our hero—who is of Italian ancestry—goes to North Beach to watch the old men play bocce, and ends up being hired by an elderly Italian paesano to find his missing granddaughter, a girl in her early twenties, the apple of his eye. “La belezza......more

Another low key, entertaining tale with clues the reader can use to solve the mystery. Very realistic, almost too much so. It's a nasty mess of the seamier side of humanity that Nameless has to sift through to find the answers. He does it, but doesn't revel in it. He's a pretty normal guy, so there......more

Another great addition to the series, and the unhappy-ish ending only made me jump into the next one quicker!......more

#20 in the Nameless Detective series. Nameless is feeling nostalgic and introspective. His thoughts take him to watch old Italian men play bocce and he is prevailed upon to check up on the granddaughter of one. Uncovering her tragic fate provokes more introspection as well as personal peril. On the......more

Quotes

“Pronzini has made the dogged, blinkered existence of a detective his exclusive domain in this relentlessly grim yet thoroughly absorbing series.” Publishers Weekly

“Bill Pronzini's Nameless Detective seems inspired by Hammett's Continental Op, a fellow San Franciscan, though far less cynical and many pounds lighter.” AudioFile

“Nameless is a wonderfully realized, evolving protagonist. His adventures don’t get any better than this--at least until the next one.” Booklist

“Exquisitely rendered—from the disillusioned goombah to the despairing Nameless, at a loss as to how to keep his partner Eberhardt from calling it quits (he can't).” Kirkus Reviews
