Elizabeth Short The Black Dahlia Biography

In January 1947, a woman walking through a quiet Los Angeles neighborhood found a body in a vacant lot. Within days, the newspapers had given the victim a nickname that outlived everything else about her: the Black Dahlia. This biography begins before the name. It follows Elizabeth Short from her birth in Hyde Park, Boston, through a childhood shaped by the Great Depression and a father who vanished. It continues through wartime Florida and California, a lost fiancé, the hopeful and hard months in Hollywood, and her final weeks in San Diego. It then turns to the investigation: the press frenzy, the taunting letters, the false confessions, the suspects, and the reasons the case has never been solved. It also looks at how a real young woman was turned into a legend, and what is lost when that happens.Drawing on the documented record and clearly marking what is uncertain, this book restores the person behind the headlines: a girl who loved the movies, crossed a continent in wartime, and wanted to be somebody.
