Synopsis

An intimate, revelatory novel about a notorious woman at the center of the American Revolution.

During the war for independence, Elizabeth Loring rose to infamy as the American mistress of William Howe, the British general who failed repeatedly to stamp out George Washington’s rebellion. Critics blamed Howe’s lapses on the decadent hours he shared with Betsey. She’s been a punchline in history books ever since—until now.

In Elizabeth Loring Slept Here, Betsey finally tells her side of the story. Just twenty-two years old at the start of the war, Betsey has a life full of promise: a secure marriage, a trio of children, a place among the colonial elite. But when rebellion ignites, her world cracks open. Neighbors turn on neighbors. Families divide. Class and racial barriers shift. Betsey finds herself torn between two sides of a brutal conflict. Her husband is loyal to the Crown, but across enemy lines there are people Betsey can’t forget: her first love, now a leading Patriot; her tender, tormented uncle; and a daring female cousin who will join Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. In a war this closely contested, where Betsey chooses to stand (and lie) could determine not only her family’s fate, but the future of a nation.

Impeccably researched and beautifully written, Elizabeth Loring Slept Here reclaims a woman’s history that has been reduced to scandal and invites us to see the Revolution through her eyes. Relaying the untold dramas of parlors, nurseries, kitchens, and bedchambers, the novel offers a poignant take on a defining moment in America’s history.

About The Author

Sara St. Antoine is an award-winning author and editor. Although distantly related to Elizabeth Lloyd Loring, she never paid much attention to the stories she heard as a child about her New England ancestors. Then she moved across the river from one of the houses where Loring once lived, and her curiosity grew. Sara graduated from the Ann Arbor Public Schools, then earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Williams College and a master’s degree from the Yale School of the Environment. She lives with her family in Cambridge, Massachusetts, near some of the most celebrated sites of the American Revolution.

Quotes

“Sara St. Antoine’s assured and compulsively readable debut takes a woman history branded a harlot and reveals the full complexity of her cunning, her resilience, and her ferocious devotion as a mother. Vividly rendered, finely tended, and brilliantly woven—a reminder that women’s tools and weapons have always cut just as incisively as any general’s.”—Rachel Hochhauser, New York Times bestselling author of Lady Tremaine

“As with too many things in history, there is so much that goes untold. Here, Sara St. Antoine’s Elizabeth “Betsey” Loring steps out of the shadows to show not only her side of a sordid tale but also a unique perspective on the American Revolution. This revealing, sympathetic account illustrates anew the myriad difficulties of being a woman in a man’s world. Not every hero wears pants.”—Therese Anne Fowler, New York Times bestselling author of A Well-Behaved Woman

“What a glorious rendering of one woman’s role in the Revolutionary War! The brilliant Sara St. Antoine tells the enthralling story of the misunderstood, feisty, and talented Elizabeth “Betsey” Loring. Wife, mother, lover, friend, Betsey finds herself in a country at war divided by loyalty to the Crown, the Patriots who long for independence, and Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. In this brave retelling of one woman’s life, St. Antoine imagines a new perspective on one young woman’s place during the revolution, making Betsey an essential part of a history that rarely includes the truth about the women who built this country. A triumph!”—Adriana Trigiani, New York Times bestselling author of The View from Lake Como

“A bold and gripping story that never loses sight of the many constraints of a woman’s life. I couldn’t stop turning these pages.”—Margot Livesey, New York Times bestselling author of The Road from Belhaven

“A powerful alchemy of the author’s imagination and her meticulous attention to details, this rich novel will captivate readers from beginning to end.”—S. Kirk Walsh, nationally bestselling author of The Elephant of Belfast

“St. Antoine explores Patriot spy rings, coded correspondence, and clandestine meetings disguised as shopping trips. In a topsy-turvy world where families were torn apart and no one could be trusted, the timeless values of family, honor, and human decency prevail in this enthralling story.”—Tracey Enerson Wood, internationally and USA Today bestselling author of Katharine, the Wright Sister and The President’s Wife
