Synopsis

If the history of the twentieth century can be seen as a successful struggle to expand personal freedoms, then the history of the twentyfirst century will be seen as a contest to assert cultural, ethnic, or religious identities. From the crisis in Europe, where identity is seen as inimical to democratic freedoms, to the threats to identity posed by postmodern relativism and Marxism, to the corrosive dullness of identityless cosmopolitanism, Sharansky conducts a philosophical tour of nations, regions, and cities whose futures rest precariously on the struggle for identity. His purpose throughout is to recover that most valuable and essential political emotion, one that can reaffirm and underpin democratic societies. Together, identity and democracy assert a powerful and benign sense of purpose; divided, at odds with each other, they invite fundamentalism and rootlessness.

An amazing story from a man who lived under Stalin's Soviet Union and spent 9 years in its gulag. Sharanski was a bit repetitive throughout the book, but I felt like he was hammering home some very important points about a world gone wrong, a world that is so in love with a leftist "peace-at-all-odd......more

Sharansky’s thesis is that: …the best defense of the free world will come from those who cherish a unique way of life, for they will always have a life truly worth defending. He prefers the mosaic approach to national subcultures rather than the melting pot, “strengthening hyphenation, not erasing it…......more

Certainly a thought-provoking book. I'll admit I came to it with a great deal of skepticism since it is one of the only books George W. Bush has not only read but recommended to his staff (given copies, even). The filter I heard it through was definitely on guard. I'll blog about it, I think, since t......more
