Synopsis

Gertrude Atherton was a gothic novelist and short story writer. A protge of Ambrose Bierce, his influence can be seen in many of her stories, which often have overt references to the supernatural. In Death and the Woman, a woman sits all alone in grief at her dying husbands side, waiting for Death to claim him. In the creepy, desolate surroundings, her imagination begins to get the best of herbut is it only her imagination?

About Gertrude Atherton

Gertrude Atherton (1857–1948) was an American writer whose novels and short stories are often compared to Henry James and Edith Wharton. Born in San Francisco, she eloped at the age of nineteen. Though her husband disapproved of her writing, she continued, and with his death in 1887, she pursued her writing career full time under the guidance of Ambrose Bierce. Considered one of the early feminists, she wrote sixty books and numerous short works.

Not particularly floored by this, but slightly impressed with the emotion it gives off. Watching someone you love die is never an easy thing, and Atherton does a decent job of walking us through the pain and heartache of each passing breath until the end.
