A charming little book in praise of British cheese, written in the 1930s at a time when cheesemaking in this country was apparently at a low ebb. There are chapters by various authors extolling their favourite cheeses, and lovely illustrations by E.H. Shepherd. A great book for the cheese lover.......more
The previous time we went to England, my dad (and bro and I) fell in love with the cheeses in their sandwiches, so much so that when we came back, he asked me to help him find the cheddar cheese that he ate. With all that cheese on the mind, it’s no wonder that I borrowed this when I saw it. Cheddar......more
This little book was written in the 1930s, when British⁰ cheeses were allegedly in a bit of a slump, but it didn't occur to me until after I'd already ordered to expect rather more whining about faded English glory than celebration of English (&c.) cheeses. I was pleasantly surprised, though: even t......more
Ever since Bronwen Percival's call to arms in support of cheese as a food and not a product, I have begun to study cheese in terms of social significance as well. This 1930s book repeats the concern of the loss of flavorful and distinct cheeses in the United Kingdom as economies shift from small far......more
I love cheese, and British things, and Ernest Shepard’s illustrations… but somehow the combination was less engaging than I thought it would be. This is potentially because each cheese was written about by a different essayist, and so there was a lot of repetition of uninteresting detail (such as pa......more
“This is a rare treat, a rediscovered gem. While the stories, history and beautiful illustrations contained within this book will fill you with a sense of bucolic enchantment, its message about provenance and place is still just as relevant today as it has ever been” Dulcie Crickmore, Fen Farm Dairy “Cheddar Gorge is a delightful book full of fascinating anecdotes that narrate the history of artisan British cheesemaking up to World War II. These stories are of as much interest to cheese enthusiasts today as they were when the book was first published.” Ros Windsor, Paxton & Whitfield “A fascinating glimpse of a lost world of British cheeses, at once familiar and wildly exotic. Essential reading for anyone curious about British cheeses past, present, and future.” Bronwen and Francis Percival, authors of Reinventing the Wheel: Milk, Microbes and the Fight for Real Cheese “This is why I make cheese!! British food is understated – particularly in cheese – but is now starting to rival what France has done. But don’t tell the French, they won’t let me back in the country!” Peter Kindel, Cheesemaker, Daylesford Organic Farm “Cheddar Gorge is a lovely period piece. The EH Shepard illustrations are delightful and its superb essays clearly demonstrate that quality regional cheeses existed well before the current British dairy renaissance.” Ivan Day, Food Historian “Cheddar George gives the modern cheese maker and enthusiast a fascinating history and insight and will now remain the inspiration for artisan cheese makers. Without these stories and anecdotes, British cheeses would not have the strong respect and identity they do around the world today.” Simon Bowden, The Whole Cheese
