Synopsis

Black Beauty spent her youthful days grazing in grassy meadows, with ponds of clear water, shade trees and apples. But soon these pleasures would severely change into a life of hard and often dangerous work. She hoped that one day she would return to the meadows and be with her old friends by the apple trees.

About Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was born in England and, after a fall, was crippled at a young age. As a result, she spent a great deal of time riding in horse-drawn carriages, which led to the development of a deep concern for the proper treatment of animals. Black Beauty, Sewell's only publication, was written entirely in the last decade of her life, when she was confined to her house.
