Synopsis

“Arena” author Fredric Brown was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 29, 1906 (and often wished he had been born two days later, on Halloween). Brown began to sell mystery short stories to American magazines in 1936. His first science fiction story, "Not Yet the End", was published in the Winter 1941 issue of Captain Future. He was known for his use of humor and for his mastery of the "short- short" form—stories of one to three pages, often with ingenious plotting devices and surprise endings. Humor, Black Comedy and a postmodern outlook carried over into his novels as well. "Arena", was adapted into a 1967 episode of the television series Star Trek and a 1963 episode of The Outer Limits titled “Fun and Games.” He passed away on March 11, 1972, in Tucson, Arizona. Narrator Edward E. French is an Award-Winning Special Effects Make-up Artist whose extensive credits can be found at IMDB.com

About Fredric Brown

Fredric Brown
(1906–1972) was the only writer to achieve equal prominence in the mystery and
science fiction genres. His first foray into mystery, The Fabulous Clipjoint, won the Mystery
Writers of America’s Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Brown was
also the acknowledged master of the short short story; the famous collection Nightmares and Geezenstacks demonstrates his consummate mastery of a form limited to no more than five
hundred words. His short story “Arena” was the basis of a famed Star Trek episode; “Martians, Go Home!” was adapted for a 1992
film; “The Last Martian” was adapted for Serling’s Twilight Zone and starred Steve McQueen at the start of his career.
Brown’s work, more than forty years after his death, is increasingly prominent.
