An Opportunity

A bewitched man attempts to break free in this “hallucinogenic, loving, intelligent, visionary” (Cynthia Rimsky) novel from one of Latin America’s most original voices.
In a novel destined to become a cult classic, a narrator determines he is under a spell that has rendered him exquisitely indecisive. Desperate for help, he reaches out to a series of witches and learns that an invisible monster has attached itself to him, following him around and sapping his energy. As the narrator gets pulled into increasingly outlandish adventures in his attempts to outrun this stowaway—including a gig reporting from the frontlines of a far-flung war and imprisonment by the secret literary police—what began as a novel about the supernatural reveals itself to also be a quest to understand the very act of storytelling. From acclaimed Argentinian author Pablo Katchadjian and masterfully translated by Heather Cleary, An Opportunity is a mystical and formally inventive search for freedom at any cost.

“There are books that are brilliant, defiant, and existential, but also ruthlessly fun, and almost all of those are Katchadjian’s.”—Samanta Schweblin

“An incredible author.”—César Aira
