Synopsis

Three distinct works, one unmistakable voice. This collection brings together In Our Time, The Sun Also Rises, and The Torrents of Spring, revealing the range and evolution of Ernest Hemingway at a defining moment in his career.

In Our Time moves in fragments—short, sharp pieces that capture war, dislocation, and the quiet aftermath of violence. Moments appear and vanish quickly, yet each carries weight, building a larger picture through restraint rather than explanation.

The Sun Also Rises expands that world, following a group of expatriates drifting through Paris and Spain. Their lives are filled with movement, conversation, and tension just beneath the surface, as they search for meaning in the wake of a generation that has lost its center.

Then The Torrents of Spring shifts tone entirely—a satirical, almost playful work that takes aim at literary conventions and romantic idealism, showing another side of Hemingway’s craft.

About Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life and accomplishments are explored in-depth in the PBS documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.
