Synopsis

Amphibians invites further contemplation of female physicality—what it means to reside in a female form.

An amphibious aircraft crashes in Maine, a young girl skinny-dips with her elders, a distraught cruise ship dancer boards a water taxi in Grenada, and travelers to Dubai and Abu Dhabi long for familiar oceans; back in New England, small-town artists try to smudge out their tedium with seaside transgressions. Amphibians celebrates home in a cross-cultural way, and the sensation of feeling not quite right in one's own skin, on land and near water, at home and abroad.

I thought the writing was pretty good in this collection, but I just couldn't get interested in the stories themselves. First it took ditching the audiobook and going to print, because the audio narration style was not doing it for me. Things improved briefly with the print book, but soon I was back......more

Lara Tupper takes us on a wild ride through the world of Maine houses on lakes, cruise ships on the Mediterranean, and the watery uncertain places of a young woman's coming of age. The writing in this book is incandescent without being flowery. Tupper is a truthteller of hard truths, an explorer of......more
