Personally, this was even better than the first book. I've come to love and care for the characters and the world that they currently find themselves stranded on. Everything by W Michael Gear is great. I am really digging this new science fiction trilogy. If you haven't read the first, don't read this, although it's every bit as good. There's a lot of character & world development.
