Synopsis

There's little love in eight-year-old Tom Bedford's life. His parents are old and remote and the boarding school they've sent him to bristles with bullies and sadistic staff. The only comfort he gets is from his fantasy world of Cowboys and Indians. But when his sister Diane, a rising star of stage and screen, falls in love with one of his idols, the suave TV cowboy Ray Montane, Tom's life is transformed. They move to Hollywood and all his dreams seem to have come true. Soon, however, the sinister side of Tinseltown casts its shadow and a shocking act of violence changes their lives forever.

What happened all those years ago remains a secret that corrodes Tom's life and wrecks his marriage. Only when his estranged son, a US Marine, is charged with murder do the events resurface, forcing him to confront his demons. As he struggles to save his son's life, he will learn the true meaning of bravery.

Powerfully written and intensely moving, The Brave traces the legacy of violence behind the myth of the American West and explores our quest for love and identity, the fallibility of heroes and the devastating effects of family secrets.

I have to say that I've now read all of Nicholas Evans' books and they have all left me preplexed and somewhat sad. It seems in each book there is a charactor or two that gets hurt badly and the redemption at the end doesn't always satisfy me. The metal images he gives are so vivid and graphic (i.e.......more

I did not enjoy this book. To many cliches and a bizarre plot. The boy Tom killing Ray and then the mother/sister taking the blame and ending up being executed. Tom unable to tell anyone about his mother and ending up estranged from his family. The don Danny and a subplot of him killing innocent civ......more

I typically don't care for books set in Hollywood. The Brave, however, proves to be an exception. It is set in the west, both in the desert and in LA, and Evans provides just enough detail to "put the reader there" without delving into flowing, poetic descriptions of the landscape (which, often feel......more

I have to say, this book was a disappointment to me. In all fairness, it's not a bad story. If it had been written by anyone else, I may have enjoyed it more. But Nicholas Evans has set the bar very high for himself. I was so anticipating the emotional depth of The Horse Whisperer or Smokejumper, an......more

Written by the author of "The Horse Whisperer," this is another novel about (mostly) Americans written by an Englishman. I did enjoy the humanity of the characters and the plot was interesting. Perhaps it's the English sensibility of not expressing emotion, as the main characters, Tom and Diane, pre......more
