Synopsis

Essun's missing daughter grows more powerful every day, and her choices may destroy the world in this "magnificent" Hugo Award winner and NYT Notable Book. (NPR)

The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night.

Essun -- once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger -- has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever.

Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power -- and her choices will break the world.

N. K. Jemisin's award winning trilogy continues in the sequel to The Fifth Season.

Sadly, it’s not a happy coincidence because I highly disagree with i......more

"It's never a waste of time to educate others." With an impeccable foundation laid through The Fifth Season, the second book of The Broken Earth is all about bringing the reader up to speed on all things present. With the three character threads in the first book been already woven into a single......more

Re-Read 1/19/24: Now, while I AM still happy about the scope and creative context of this second book in the Broken Earth, absolutely loving everything about the worldbuilding, the history, and the "magic" setup, I have to admit that the slow bits and rather unlikable changes in the characters -- Sha......more

Wow, the second book in this trilogy has reminded me just why I loved the first book so much. The Obelisk Gate returns to Essun’s life, she has found a safe place to wait out the season. But, there are people from her past wanting things from her, and her daughter is still missing. Jemisin’s world b......more

Quotes

"Jemisin is now a pillar of speculative fiction, breathtakingly imaginative and narratively bold."—Entertainment Weekly

"Beyond the meticulous pacing, the thorough character work, and the staggering ambition and revelations of the narration, Jemisin is telling a story of our present, our failures, our actions in the face of repeated trauma, our responses to the heat and pressure of our times. Her accomplishment in this series is tremendous. It pole-vaults over the expectations I had for what epic fantasy should be and stands in magnificent testimony to what it could be."—NPR on The Obelisk Gate

"Jemisin builds off of the strong foundation laid in The Fifth Season ... an interesting new series."
