Synopsis

Mary’s second adventure as an undercover agent forces her to relive some harrowing childhood experiences as she seeks the identity of a murderer.Mary Quinn is back, now a trusted member of the Agency, the all-female detective unit operating out of Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls. Her new assignment sends her into the grimy underbelly of Victorian London dressed as a poor boy, evoking her own childhood memories of fear, hunger, and constant want. As she insinuates herself into the confidence of several persons of interest, she encounters others in desperate situations and struggles to make a difference without exposing—or losing—her identity. Mary’s adventure, which takes place on the building site of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, offers a fictional window into a fascinating historical time and place.

About Y. S. Lee

Y.S. Lee was born in Singapore and raised in Vancouver and Toronto. In 2004, she completed her PhD in Victorian literature and culture. This research, combined with time spent in London, inspired her to begin the Agency series, which now includes A Spy in the House, The Body at the Tower, The Traitor in the Tunnel, and Rivals in the City. She says, “The Agency is a totally unrealistic, completely fictitious antidote to the fate that would otherwise swallow a girl like Mary Quinn.”

I would have liked more than passing references to the events in those in-between months that transformed her f......more

Enjoyed the first book of the series more as it showed real promise and presented a sympathetic YA heroine, but I will now call it quits. Improbable events and inappropriate behavior, not faithful to historical tenets of Victorian era, and just silly. If I had a young adult reader in my house I woul......more
