I mentioned <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Happy-Traveller-Book-Poor\/dp\/B005FRKDJQ\">The Happy Traveller<\/a><\/span><\/em> (1923) by the Reverend Frank Tatchell, because it&#8217;s brilliant and deserves your attention.<\/li>\n<li>\u009fFrommers took us on\u00a0 car journeys in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/travelnotes-20\/detail\/0470423366\">France<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>\u009fFor younger, poorer travelers, we recommended\u00a0 Lonely Planet&#8217;s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/shop.lonelyplanet.com\/europe\/europe-on-a-shoestring-travel-guide-7\/?lpaffil=lphp-column\">Europe on a Shoestring,<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u009fZagat&#8217;s guides are the go-to source for restaurants &#8211; we thought we&#8217;d dine in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.zagat.com\/collections\/restaurant-guides\/products\/paris-restaurants-u-s-edition-2012-13\">Paris<\/a><\/span> with them.<\/li>\n<li>\u009fFor adventure on a budget, we went with the many guides from Lonely Planet, looking at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/shop.lonelyplanet.com\/nepal\/nepal-travel-guide-9\/\">Nepal <\/a><\/span>\u00a0and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/shop.lonelyplanet.com\/africa\/botswana-and-namibia-travel-guide-3\/\">Botswana<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>\u009fFor adventure at premium prices,\u00a0 we looked at Fodor&#8217;s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fodors-Complete-African-Safari-Planner\/dp\/0679009248\/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1371146789&amp;sr=1-7&amp;keywords=safari+books\">The Complete African Safari Planner \u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebookhaven.net\/Z_Walk_in_the_Woods.html\">The Book Haven<\/a><\/span> has a great review of Bill Bryson&#8217;s <em>A Walk in the Woods.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u009fDavid Miller&#8217;s\u00a0 <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audiobooksnow.com\/#!p=details&amp;id=152010\">AWOL on the Applachian Trail<\/a><\/span><\/em> covered the same ground, but less incompetently than the hapless Bryson and Katz team.<\/li>\n<li>\u009fFor classic travel tales we looked at Eric Newby&#8217;s\u00a0 <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/artsandculture\/travelbooks\/4932008\/The-20-best-travel-books-of-all-time.html?image=14\">A Short walk in the Hindu Kush<\/a><\/span><\/em> and Mark Twain&#8217;s <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audiobooksnow.com\/#!p=details&amp;id=101309\">Following the Equator<\/a><\/span><\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pack your bags\u2026 and head for your armchair!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Travel books have a wide appeal, to actual travelers, potential travelers and simple armchair explorers. \u009fWe looked at The Daily Telegraph &#8216;s list of twenty best travel books.
