Synopsis

In this extraordinary fantasy epic, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Dresden Files leads readers into a world where the fate of the realm rests on the shoulders of a boy with no power to call his own...

For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies—elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal. But in the remote Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans’ most savage enemy—the Marat horde—return to the Valley, Tavi’s courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war...

The book gets 5 stars but the narrator gets 1. I had already read the book (I only listen to audio books of books I've already read) and new it was great so I was excited to listen to it until I saw Kate Reading was the narrator. Unfortunately several of my favorite authors use her so I've listened to more than a few books she has narrated. For some reason she has an extreme fondness for the "ah" sound and other soft vowel sounds and seems incapable of making a hard "a" sound. That combined with adding in accents is maddening. Personally I feel the only time accents should be used is if the author writes them into the books, otherwise inflection is enough. Well, enough griping on my part. Time to slog through a little more of the book. I can only listen to a little bit at a time.
